Vicki Harvell – Planting Seeds of Hope – 6/11/2009

Today we had the privilege of planting trees at Redeemed’s new property. This property was basically given to them by the government and now they are working to transform it into a place for their church and school. These trees represent vision and hope for the future. As we went along planting trees our group kept getting bigger. People we didn’t even know where following along and celebrating each tree that was planted. These people are constantly stepping out in faith and trusting God for all they need. We have so much to learn from them; their love for God is unfailing. In spite of their circumstances they praise God continually, they thank him for all they have and love him with all their hearts. After planting trees we walked through the Quarry and saw how the people live and work. We visited two families while walking through the slum. The people are so hospitable and welcoming; all we’ve heard is “Feel welcome here!” and “Feel at home here”. Kenyans love visitors. Katherine welcomed us into her 10’ x 10’ home where she lives with her three sons. She is a part of the HIV/AIDS support group at the church. She is an inspiration for the group, she has moved from denial about being HIV positive to living her life and supporting her children. She has moved from one of the worst slums in Nairobi into a safer neighborhood and a stone structure. We got to visit with the support group afterwards, we asked them questions and they asked us questions. One lady stood up and asked if we knew anyone who was HIV positive? If we had ever experienced this before? If there was anyone in our community who is HIV positive? When we told her yes all the walls seemed to come down. When they realized that they are not alone and that even Americans deal with this disease it gave them hope and inspiration. Kenyans love. They love tea, they love visitors, they love shaking hands, they love helping, they love God. We have learned so much already and the fellowship has been so sweet. Please pray for our brothers and sisters; we are all in this together.
